Today, the company returned one last time to Philippo and Hippolito, their enigmatic lost play about two men of that name. You can read more about this play in the entry for 9 July.

This is the last known performance of Philippo and Hippolito. It debuted back in July and for three months it was one of the most frequently performed plays at the Rose. But its box office gradually shrank to untenable levels and the players have decided to let it go to its reward. Sadly, we will never know what this play was about or what adventures those two guys go up to.

Just for the hell of it, here's a graph of the box office records of the three plays that the company has recently ceased performing. Among other things, it brings out how much more frequent the performances of Philippo and Hippolito were.

Less than a week has gone by and the players have rushed Philippo and Hippolito back to the stage, for no obvious reason. Its box office continues its slow, gradual decline and can now fairly be described as terrible. Yet here it is again. Why?

A week and a half after its last performance, Philippo and Hippolito continues to be one of the most frequently performed plays at the Rose this year. But its box office also continues to shrink upon each reappearance.

What's next?

There will be no blog entry tomorrow because 15th September was a Sunday in 1594, and the players did not perform. Henslowe's Diary ... as a Blog! will thus return on the 16th, for a week that will include one new play.

The company have waited only a week before reviving Philippo and Hippolito, which is becoming one of the most frequently performed plays at the Rose this year. But like many of its fellows introduced around the same time back in July, attendance is now declining to an uncomfortable degree. Its sell-by date may be approaching.

As with the previous performance, the company have waited a week and a half before reviving Philippo and Hippolito. Unlike some of its fellows in the repertory, the play has rebounded slightly since last time, to a rather more tolerable level of box office receipts.

Philippo and Hippolito is one of the few plays that the Admiral's Men have been performing with unusual frequency, but this time they have waited a week and a half since its last performance. After an excellent start, the play has been gradually sliding in popularity, and is now very clearly on its way out.

What's next?

There will be no performance tomorrow because 18th August was a Sunday in 1594 and the players did not perform. Henslowe's Diary ... as a Blog! will thus return on the 19th, for a week of the old favourites.

Surprisingly enough, the Admiral's Men have revived Philippo and Hippolito a mere five days after its previous performance. This is one of the few plays that they are performing with exceptional frequency.  As with Belin Dun, the other major play of this kind, it's hard to be sure why they are doing this, as the resulting box office is not notably better than that of other plays.

Henslowe's dates have gotten out of sequence again, but it'll only last a couple of days this time.

Anyway, today the Admiral's Men once again returned to Philippo and Hippolito, their enigmatic lost play about two men of that name. You can read more about this play in the entry for 9 July.

Despite their shift to performing the still newish Philippo and Hippolito only once a week, the players continue to receive a solidly average audience for it. They probably think of it as one of their success stories.

The players are slowing up on their frequent performances of this play, having now waited nearly a week before reviving it. This relative pause has had no effect on the play's box office, though, which is identical to the last outing.

Philippo and Hippolito received its premiere little more than a week ago, and yet the players have already performed it three times. They are clearly convinced that they are onto a winner, but today's performance received merely average box office, suggesting that the play's novelty is already wearing off.

Today, the Admiral's Men quickly returned to the stage Philippo and Hippolito, their enigmatic lost play about two men of that name. You can read more about this play in the entry for 9 July.

The players were obviously pleased with the debut performance of Philippo and Hippolito four days ago. Unlike Galiaso, which languished a fortnight after its premiere, this play has been rushed back to the Rose, and has been rewarded with  handsome, if not jaw-dropping, box office.

Last week, the Admiral's Men played it safe by cycling through their existing repertory. But today, they premiered a new play.

Two Young Men by Crispin van den Broeck, c.1590
Sadly, Philippo and Hippolito is a lost play and we know nothing at all about it. The title offers no clues except that it was clearly about two men of that name. What those two men got up to, and whether their adventures were funny or tragic, we will never know.

But whatever took place on stage, the premiere of Philippo and Hippolito was a great success. As was typical of debut performances, the theatre was packed and the players filled their coffers.
