Today, the Admiral's Men returned to A Toy to Please Chaste Ladies, an enigmatic lost play; you can read more about it in the entry for 14 November, 1595.

This is the first outing for The Toy since the re-opening of the Rose, but it continues to return very poor box office.

Today, the Admiral's Men revived The Blind Beggar of Alexandria, a comedy by George Chapman about a master of disguise. You can read more about this play in the entry for 12 February.

This is the first outing for the immensely popular Blind Beggar since the re-opening of the Rose. Today's audience represents a half-full theatre, which is not bad in what is proving to be a rather lean period.

What's next?

There will be no blog entry tomorrow, because 7 November was a Sunday in 1596 and the players did not perform. Henslowe's Diary ... as a Blog! will thus return on the 8th. See you then!

Today, the Admiral's Men returned to Long Meg of Westminster, their play about the Amazonian warrior woman of London legend. You can read more about this play in the entry for 14 February, 1595.

After the stunning success of Long Meg on All Saints' Day earlier in the week, the company has rushed it back to the stage. But it seems the crowd was only there because of the public holiday. Word of mouth must have been terrible, as an exceptionally tiny audience has shown up for today's performance.

Faustus summoning Mephistopheles: from the

Today, the Admiral's Men revived Dr Faustus, Christopher Marlowe's famous tragedy about a scholar who sells his soul to the devil. You can read more about it in the entry for 2 October.

After a relatively successful performance a week ago, the company has rushed Dr Faustus back to the stage, but today's mediocre box office is more typical of the fortunes of this over-familiar play.

3 November, 1596 - A Knack to Know an Honest Man

Here's what the Admiral's Men performed at the Rose playhouse on this day, 424 years ago...

Two  Young Venetian Men (anon., 1515)
Today, for the last time that we know of, the Admiral's Men performed A Knack to Know an Honest Man, their comical moral romance set in Venice. You can read more about this play in the entry for 23rd October, 1594.

This performance of A Knack to Know an Honest Man marks its first appearance since April. But it's also its last recorded performance. The play premiered two years ago, in October 1594, and for a time it was unusually popular until, like all plays at the Rose, its box office eventually dwindled.

The company has had a strange relationship with The Knack of late, often ignoring it for months before returning to it for isolated one-off performances (in a similar manner to The French Doctor, which we noted a few days ago). As with most of these performances, the unimpressive box office shows no particular excitement from the audience, and it seems that after today, the company will finally abandon this venerable comedy. Farewell!

1 November, 1596 - Long Meg of Westminster

Today is All Saints Day, also known as All Hallow's Day, a public holiday. On this special day, the Admiral's Men have returned to Long Meg of Westminster, their play about the Amazonian warrior woman of London legend. You can read more about this play in the entry for 14 February, 1596.

Long Meg has not been seen at the Rose since last year, when its box office had declined to a truly miserable level. But the company has decided to bring it back for this new season, and thanks to the public holiday, a large crowd has arrived to see it. We'll see if it continues to do better than it had.
